Dancing with the Stars 2013 premiered March 18 on ABC with an all-new cast of celebrity characters. Included in the mix was The Bachelor Sean Lowe, who delivered an unusually aggressive foxtrot that drew colorful commentary from the judges.

During Lowe’s pre-dance segment, he touched on his happy upbringing in Texas and shared that he’d decided to appear on DWTS so he wouldn’t embarrass fiancee Catherine Giudici during their first dance as husband and wife. As he worked with pro partner Peta Muragtroyd, he admitted that he didn’t have the best moves ever, but insisted “what I lack in raw talent I will make up in dedication.”

Lowe and Murgatroyd hit the ballroom to the sounds of Huey Lewis and the News’ “The Power of Love.” Although Lowe looked a little robotic and aggressive at times, the women in the ballroom seemed to love seeing him in action.

The judges, however, weren’t quite as impressed. Head judge Len Goodman told Lowe to dance with less “attack” and more finesse. Bruno Tonioli joked “for a dance virgin you have an impressive pelvic thrust” and likened the routine to “a chippendales version of a ballroom dance.” Carrie Ann Inaba appreciated his “exuberance” and predicted that he could go far in the competition, though she also noted some awkwardness that needed to be addressed.

For their effort, Lowe and Murgatroyd earned 19 out of 30 possible judges’ points. They trail leader board toppers Zendaya Coleman and Val Chmerkovskiy by a five-point margin.

Dancing with the Stars 2013 resumes March 25 with a second week of dances from the new cast before the first pair gets the boot on March 26. Will Sean Lowe survive to dance again? Watch and see.
