Dancing with the Stars All Stars 2012 continued October 15 as the surviving couples performed their Opponents’ Choice week picks before the usual judging trio and guest panelist Paula Abdul. Fortunately for soap star Kelly Monaco, her competitors’ attempt at derailing her success with a difficult style failed and she danced away with glowing reviews.
Kelly and pro partner Val Chmerkovskiy were less than amused when fellow DWTS competitors Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke decided they should perform a dance in the emotionally taxing contemporary style. Experienced ballroom hoofer Val was frustrated because he’d never dabbled in contemporary, while Kelly struggled with the degree of vulnerability required.
But as it turned out, Kelly had little trouble conveying emotion and Val’s choreography was lovely. Their “Fix You” number was graceful and moving, and some of the lifts they performed were excellent. They appeared out of synch at times, but all in all, it was a great way to end the evening.
Len Goodman called them the biggest revelation of all the couples. Paula said, “I’m most proud of you” of all of the celebs and called it “beautiful.” Bruno Tonioli called the dance “emotionally charged, deeply felt” and “believable.” Carrie Ann Inaba finished the critiques by noting how Kelly “laid your heart out there and the lines were gorgeous to match,” but still had to note that some of the moves were “beyond your ability.”
Kelly and Val scored 37.5 points out of a possible 40, a mark good enough for third place on the weekly leaderboard. Co-leaders Shawn Johnson and partner Derek Hough and Gilles Marini and partner Peta Murgatroyd each scored a near-perfect mark of 39.5.
