‘Dancing with the Stars’ All-Stars Recap: Apolo Anton Ohno Goes For Gold on 11/05/2012

On Monday’s Dancing with the Stars All-Stars show that focused on fusion dances, Apolo Anton Ohno was out to hit the top of the leaderboard. And, with pro partner Karina Smirnoff, this pair tried hard with their mix of the cha cha and the Paso Doble, which was a very tall order as far as performance is concerned.

Here’s why: Although this so-called “pacho” was made up of two Latin dances, these ballroom standards are very different in sensibility. The cha cha is a fun-loving dance while the Paso is a very strong and serious dance. To put them together seems impossible but apparently that’s not true on DWTS.

So what did Karina Smirnoff do with her choreography to handily combine these two ballroom dances into one routine?

At the beginning she configured some cha cha steps that were all lightness and frivolity for this pair of keen competitors. During the routine Apolo was wearing a white dinner jacket but when, during the very dramatic, very dynamic Paso Doble part of the routine was on show, he showed off his fine physique by tearing off that fancy garment, going bare for the rest of the number. This was the first time Anton Ohno had ever stripped for, unlike certain other dancers (cough, cough, Maks) who like to go half-naked on the floor boards–and so everyone took special notice.

In fact, even demure head DWTS arbiter Len Goodman got in a quip about this wardrobe change-up, chirping, “It’s like looking in a mirror.” The ballroom savvy Brit seemed thrilled with what he had just seen and was happy that these two dancers didn’t play it safe with this most recent assignment for the ABC talent show that gives the winner a glittery mirror ball trophy..

Meanwhile, judge Bruno Tonioli decided to compare Apolo’s persona to that of a movie star, saying he should have been cast in Twilight. He called his most recent effort “triumphant.” That said, Carrie Ann Inaba was in accord, calling out this offering by declaring that this “pacho’ routine “started off strong and ended up stronger.”

So did the DWTS judges put their scores where their comments were. Yes! Each one gave this dance a nine so the total of 27 puts these two dancers in good stead for, hopefully, not getting voted off in the double elimination next week.

With that said, what do you think of this most recent Dancing with the Stars All-Stars performance? Did you think Apolo Anton Ohno struck gold with his Karina Smirnoff-choreographed “pacho” routine on 11/05/2012? Thoughts? Thanks.
