Last week, Dancing with the Stars contender Chynna Phillips performed a stunning Viennese waltz, putting her at the top of the leaderboard. This week, however, she underwhelmed some with her DWTS jive.
Ballroom pro and personal mentor Tony Dovolani called this determined contestant “one feisty character,” and then added that Chynna is “a little hard on herself.”
That trait was apparent as Phillips practiced, with the singer saying “fudge” and “fudgeicles” a lot (instead of more inflammatory language) whenever she made a goof.
And perhaps that’s why she’s so careful when it comes to trying to get all the steps in all the right places on all the right notes during Dancing with the Stars.
No doubt she tried. Wearing a sexy two-piece, turquoise number, gussied up with strands of crystals that fell over her breast area, Chynna Phillips looked the part to play perfection. On the other hand, Tony Dovolani was dressed like a nerd, but he did hand over perfection just as soon as the duo ran down the Dancing with the Stars stairs to perform their routine.
A lot of tricky steps were thrown in for good measure, courtesy choreographer Dovolani who had Phillips swinging beneath his spread legs as the crowd went wild. They cheered again as Chynna let herself fall backwards into Tony’s arms. But were these moves enough to get good scores from the three DWTS judges?
Carrie Ann Inaba admitted she enjoyed watching Chynna dance, telling her, “You have natural refinement.” But then this critic asked in a rhetorical way, “You are not injured right? I kind of felt like you played it a little safe. I wanted to see just a little more.”
And then Len Goodman chimed in with his usual Dancing with the Stars sermon. He said, “This show is about expectations. I thought you would really come out… The jive is about ‘wow’ and I didn’t feel like you went for it.”
Bruno Tonioli was less harsh, telling this aspiring dancer, “The thing is there is a sexy siren inside of you and it is just trying to come out. You have to give it that feel. Everything was there. As soon as you go full ball it is going to be wonderful.”
And it will be, if this Dancing with the Stars contestant stays in the competition (see her dance from Monday here). Meanwhile, Chynna Phillips earned three 7s for her effort. Is that enough to keep her in the running? Check out tonight’s results show to find out.
