David Bowie is celebrating his 66th birthday today, January 8, by releasing his first new single in a decade.

Bowie has acquired and kept many fans and has become a rock legend since he first came to listeners’ attention back in 1969 with “Space Oddity.” But those fans were beginning to wonder if Bowie was ever going to release anything new. HIs last CD was released in 2003 and, as an article in the Huffiington Post states, he has almost been retired. He even turned down the opportunity to headline the opening ceremonies at the London Olympics. Therefore, many people were surprised by the release of the new single, ” Where Are We Now?” and the announcement that there will be a new CD, titled “The Next Day,” in March. But then, Bowie is the master of surprises.

Certainly, Bowie has earned the right to take a decade off if he wants to, and his fans will welcome him back whenever he chooses. There is so much Bowie music already, which can sustain the fan base and add new fans to it for years to come. But it is good to know that there will be even more.

“Where are We Now?” is already getting critical praise. Described in the article as “somber” and “nostalgic.” The Huffington Post quotes The Telegraph as calling it “the most surprising, perfect and welcome comeback in rock history.”

Welcome back, David Bowie. Thank you for not retiring entirely.
