The death of LPGA golfer Erica Blasberg that took place almost four months ago on May 9th has officially been ruled a suicide according to the Clark County Coroner’s Office in Nevada.
A native to Southern California, Blasberg died of asphyxia. She also had a toxic level of prescription drugs in her system as well. These included headache, pain, cough and anti-anxiety medications.
Coroner Michael Murphy said this:
“While asphyxia was the primary cause of death, the presence of toxic levels of prescription drugs in Ms. Blasberg’s system was a significant factor.”
The drugs that were found in her system were butalbital, temazepam, alprazolam, codeine, hydrocodone, and tramadol. The amount of each drug will not be released due to Nevada law.
Foul play has been ruled out, but a warrant has been issued on Tuesday by the Henderson Police Department to Dr. Thomas Hess on obstruction of justice charges.
The charges Hess is facing are removing items from the scene of her death at her home in Henderson, NV. before the police got there. Hess called 911 the day of her death, but wasn’t present when they got there.
Hess later admitted that he disturbed the scene by hiding an apparent suicide note and prescriptions in his car.
Just days before her death, she was planning on going to Mobile, AL for a qualifying round in the LPGA Tour according to her family.
25 year old Blashbergwas in her sixth season on the LPGA Tour. She attended high school in Corona, CA and went on to become a two-time All-American at the University of Arizona. She had won several college tournaments and left in her sophomore year to turn pro. She was named in Golfweek in 2003 as player of the year.
Someone who had everything, but was probably very sad underneath it all. Although the details of what happened sound a bit sketchy. Prayers and thoughts to the family. She will be missed by the world of professional golf as well as others. If only she would have gotten some help perhaps this would have been avoided. Rest in peace Erica.
