Derek Jeter has been voted New York’s greatest athlete in history. The New York Yankees’ shortstop has been a staple in New York sports for well over a decade. In a poll conducted by the Siena College Research Institute, Jeter beat out baseball legends Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle and also football great, Joe Namath.

When people thiDerek Jeter 2007 by Keith Allisonnk of Derek Jeter, they automatically think of New York. He has made himself in to one of the most prominent figures in sports. He is also hated by rivals (especially Red Sox fans), which can only mean that he is great, right?

It’s a little surprising that Jeter beat out some legends, but many people who were alive to see those legends are no longer here (or are not voting in a research institute poll). There have been so many great athletes in the world that have been honored and respected by their teammates, colleagues, and fans, however in present day, who can disagree with this poll? Who is better in New York than Derek Jeter?
