Dick Clark had undergone prostate surgery prior to suffering the heart attack that ended his life. On April 17th he was operated on for benign prostatic hyperplasia.

According to a report from TMZ, Clark’s death certificate revealed this detail. This type of prostate surgery is typically performed when the prostate has become so enlarged that it prohibits urination.

The death certificate also shows that Clark died of acute myocardial infarction—which is simply the medical term for a heart attack. He died on April 18th, just a day after the prostate surgery. He also suffered from coronary artery disease—likely the cause of the massive stroke that severely altered his lifestyle just a few short years ago.
