Did Lady Gaga Cost Colton Dixon the ‘American Idol’ 2012 Title?

Plenty of viewers were dumbfounded by the untimely elimination of ostensible fan favorite Colton Dixon at the close of last night’s American Idol 2012 top 7 results show. But the outcome didn’t surprise the funky-haired Colton, who placed the blame for his exit from the competition in just one place: squarely on his own shoulders.

The devoutly Christian performer, who impressed judges Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler, and Randy Jackson with his range and enviable ability to transform any song —from the country hit “Islands in the Stream”, which he delivered as a duet with fellow finalist Skylar Laine, to Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time”—into a ‘Colton’ song, said during his exit interview that he suspected he might be booted. He criticized himself for choosing Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” as his round one selection, noting that it probably alienated his strong Christian fan base because it failed to express who he is as a performer and a person.

But would Christians really withhold votes from someone as devout as Colton because of a single bad song choice? Given that Christianity affirms the notion that humans are flawed and make mistakes, one would think that a little forgiveness —and a few votes—would’ve been in order regardless of a less than perfect selection.

Despite the ouster, Colton Dixon will continue to pursue a career in Christian music. And a wildly successful career it will likely be.
