Dinosaur gas may have warmed prehistoric Earth. Isn’t that odd? The giant creatures ate plants and warmed their planet with the gas they produced as they digested their food.
The ancient dinosaur gas may have worked much in the way that cows produce methane gas today. Because of this situation, the Earth was likely hotter than it is today, which was likely part of the ultimate global warming.
Estimates show that dinosaurs may have produced an astonishing 520 million tons of methane gas each year. That sounds smelly to say the least. Today’s livestock produce about 80 million metric tons, which is a fraction of what was going into the atmosphere during the Mesozoic Era.
The study’s Dave Wilkinson said, “A simple mathematical model suggests that the microbes living in sauropod dinosaurs may have produced enough methane to have an important effect on the Mesozoic climate. Indeed, our calculations suggest that these dinosaurs could have produced more methane than all modern sourcesÂ—both natural and man-madeÂ—put together.”
