Diamond Pet Foods recall is underway for food believed to possibly contain Salmonella, with the recall extending through the US and Canada. According to the CDC, Several brands of their dog foods are linked to a multi-state outbreak.
A dog breeder from Granby, Connecticut, returned her bag of Taste of the Wild dog food to the Tracker Supply Company in Southwick, Massachusetts, but she complained that the company was too slow when putting out the recall.
According to the website Patch, Tracy Cavaciuti said that it’s “people and dogs that are getting pretty sick” due to the outbreak. A friend of hers in New Hampshire, who is also a dog breeder, has three of her dogs fallen ill. The advice that woman got was to throw out the dishes the dog food was in without touching them.
This sounds extremely serious, not only for the pet but for the humans that take care of the pets. Hopefully this won’t become as dangerous a situation as seen back in 2007. Pet owners will remember that scare when pet food made in China contained the lethal melamine, which led to the deaths from kidney failure of dogs and cats.
With pets becoming more like family members during the past few decades, many pet owners are turning more to homemade pet food to make sure for their pet’s safety. The more that this type of incident comes up, people will start looking for the pet foods made in small local plants or they’ll make it themselves.
The Diamond Pet Food claims that it voluntarily recalled several of their pet food products that got manufactured in Gaston, SC. The food manufactured between December 9, 2011 and April 7, 2012 is in this recall. The brands they recalled on May 4th have not tested positive for Salmonella.
The CDC reports a total of 14 people from 9 states fell ill with this strain of Salmonella infantis. Here are the cases broken down by the states: Alabama (1), Connecticut (1), Michigan (1), Missouri (3), North Carolina (3), New Jersey (1), Ohio (2), Pennsylvania (1), and Virginia (1).
