Don Rickles has long been known for his acerbic humor so it shouldn’t come as any surprise to learn something he said at the American Film Institute tribute to Shirley MacLaine is being cut from the television broadcast. The joke was about President Barack Obama.

According to a report from USA Today, the 86-year-old comedian’s entire career has been highlighted by insult humor, but he may have taken it a bit too far on June 7th–the night the actual tribute took place. In fact, the crowd was rather shocked by his remark.

Profile Picture“I shouldn’t make fun of the blacks,” Rickles said. “President Obama is a personal friend of mine. He was over to the house yesterday, but the mop broke.”

President Obama wasn’t the only person to come under fire from Don Rickles’ humor that night either. He took aim at the guest of honor Shirley MacLaine, her brother Warren Beatty and Jack Nicholson, too.

“Shirley, I never read your books, and I don’t plan to,” Rickles said. “I know your brother (Beatty) very well, and I never liked him.”

“He’s not here tonight – he’s with the Lakers, oiling their jocks,” Don Rickles said of actor Jack Nicholson.

His barb aimed at President Obama really went too far, however, and it was clear to all in attendance at the event. A certain uncomfortable feeling was said to have spread throughout the room.

Do you think Rickles will be banned from performing at future events? Do you think he meant to be hurtful with his careless joke or is he simply off a generation who still feels it’s okay to insult other races, religions and ethnicities?
