Dr. Laura Schlessinger was on Larry King and explained why she’s letting her radio contract lapse without renewal at the end of the year. So she can return to exercising her right to free speech as an American citizen without fear of reprisal.
According to E!Online, the controversial talk show host told King that “I want to be able to say what’s on my mind and in my heart and what I think is helpful and useful without somebody getting angry.”
Schlessinger has been under fire this week since speaking with a caller on her syndicated radio show about the seeming double standards that arise in conversations between white and black people. She even freely used the so-called “N-word” half a dozen times to make her point. Her caller was not placated. And the next day Dr. Laura was pilloried in the press for what some deemed irresponsible behavior. She immediately apologized. But it doesn’t seem to have helped.
The interview with King may have been a way to explain why she’s decided to end her show when her contract expires. “My contract is up for my radio show at the end of the year and I’ve made the decision not to do radio anymore. The reason is I want to regain my First Amendment rights.”
It doesn’t appear to make sense on its face that the best way to exercise free speech is to give up a huge radio show. Maybe Dr. Laura is losing her touch.
