Today, March 2, 2010 marks the birthday of one of the iconic pop culture and children’s authors of all time.  He’s written and illustrated popular books such as “One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish”, “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas”, “Green Eggs and Ham”, “Oh the Places You’ll Go” and “Cat in the Hat”.  That’s right, it’s officially Dr. Seuss birthday 2010!  Fans of the rhyming and poetic author are paying tribute to his classic works, via Dr. Seuss activities in classrooms across the country, as well as sharing Dr. Seuss Quotes.  The Seussville playground is also a popular site that many are visiting today.  In conjunction with all of the fanfare, there is also the National Read Across America Day which is an initiative to get children more interested in reading, and that is observed on Dr. Seuss’ birthday today.

If Dr. Seuss were still alive today he’d be 97 years old, and most likely still churning out great works.  His real name is Theodor Seuss Geisel and he’s got over 60 children’s books to his pen name.  Sixteen of Seuss’ works appeared on the 2000 Publisher’s Weekly list of bestselling children’s books of all time.  To Seuss’ credit, he’s also published books for adults which include the popular graduation gift “Oh the Places You’ll Go” as well as a book entitled “You’re Only Old Once” which is a satire about clinics for the elderly.

Dr. Seuss’ works have become so popular that they’ve become theatrical adaptations for both screen and stage, including the “Cat in the Hat” movie starring Mike Myers, the “Grinch” movie with Jim Carrey and a plethora of TV cartoon versions.  A CGI version of “Horton hears a Who!” came out in 2008 and was critically-acclaimed.  The Islands of Adventure theme park includes “Seuss Landing” which features the visual stylings of Dr. Seuss throughout the Orlando park.

The Dr. Seuss Read Across America activities have taken place on Tuesday at various locations, with many Barnes & Nobles bookstores across the country participating.  Here’s a few final Dr. Seuss quotes to reflect on for Dr. Seuss’ Birthday 2010 edition.

“Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.”

“Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.”

“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”

“I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, It’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, And that enables you to laugh at life’s realities.”

“Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So… get on your way.”

…and some very appropriate advice from this all-time great author and cartoonist:

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
