Today we celebrate beloved author Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Dr. Seuss, or Theodor Geisel, was born on March 2, 1904. He is known for many of the books he wrote for young children. A batch of books that include “The Cat In the Hat” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. These classics inspired animated specials, a musical, and several films.Read Across America celebrates today as a holiday to encourage children to read. To honor this day all  of Ocean Media’s Dr. Seuss Apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch are on sale for $0.99!

Today there will be a kickoff by the NEA President Dennis Van Roekal at the Library of Congress. There students will be treated to readings and will pledge to read through out the year. The Read Across America Cat-a-Van will be making stops across the Midwest. For activities and a chance to win $250 visit the Read Across America Website.

The books of Dr. Seuss have inspired generations. I see so many Grads receive copies of the book, “Oh the Places You’ll Go”. The story of the Sneetches  teaches us to embrace our differences and that no Sneetch is better than any other on the beach. The Lorax has become a symbol for the environmental movement and it’s struggle. Many of these stories teach us important lessons even as adults. And that is what makes them so enduring.

Dr. Seuss is turning 106 years old today. Why not honor his creative work by reading a child one of his stories. What is your favorite? For me it is “Oh, Say Can You Say:” a series of tongue twisters sure to delight any child or person young at heart.
