‘DWTS’ All-Star Maksim Chmerkovskiy ‘Shocked’ by Hope Solo’s ‘Defamatory’ Allegations

It looks like there’s drama brewing for pro hoofer Maksim Chmerkovskiy outside the Dancing with the Stars ballroom! Olympic soccer star Hope Solo, who served as the hottie Ukrainian’s celebrity partner during DWTS season 13, wrote in her newly released memoir that Chmerkovskiy had once slapped her across the face during show rehearsals. But did he do it, or is it a pathetic attention-grab?

A previous report cited a set of cryptic tweets posted by Chmerkovskiy which may or may not have been directed at Solo. But an August 17 article from TMZ erases any question marks surrounding Chmerkovskiy’s response to the soccer star’s claims.

A source close to the dancer said Chmerkovskiy was “absolutely shocked” by Solo’s claim, and pointed out that they’d been friendly with one another following DWTS and in the days leading up to the Olympics. He has no idea what prompted her to make such a “defamatory statement”.

So what’s Solo’s deal? It’s hard to say for sure, but it’s not the first time in recent history that she’s started a public tussle with a fellow celebrity. She unleashed a quartet of angry—and arguably, completely unwarranted—tweets directed at former soccer star Brandi Chastain, who served as a game commentator, after Chastain offered up a minor criticism of a Team USA player in late July. The final tweet of the venomous bunch read “I feel bad 4 our fans that have 2 push mute, especially bc @arlowhite is fantastic.@brandichastain should be helping 2 grow the sport #fb” While it’s understandable that she felt a need to protect her friend, she went way overboard.

So what lies at the root of both situations? Is Chmerkovskiy lying? Doubtful. He’s intense, but has the support of several previous dance partners, including Erin Andrews and Kirstie Alley, who well-understand the DWTS game, making Solo’s allegations seem very strange indeed.

So can Solo simply not take criticism? It sure seems like it. She responded poorly when criticized by the Dancing with the Stars judges, and then again when a teammate’s abilities were questioned. Criticism is part of life, and she’d better learn to take it without lashing out at those trying to be helpful—like Brandi Chastain and Maksim Chmerkovskiy—or she may well find herself in serious hot water down the line.
