‘DWTS All-Stars’ 2012 Country Week Recap — Will Kirstie Alley’s Booty Action Save Her from Elimination?
DWTS All-Stars 2012 continued October 29 with a rootin’, tootin’ Country-themed evening of performances. Although the potential for uber-corny numbers was high, the zaniest routine of the two-hour episode belonged to not just one of the eight remaining couples, but to all of them.
All 16 performers joined forces to deliver a show-ending group freestyle routine, which featured live performances by two country acts. Big and Rich opened the number with a rendition of “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy,” a song very familiar to longtime fans of Dancing with the Stars. The stars and their partners hit the ballroom in accompaniment, moving through a decidedly disjointed set of moves that were all in all, probably more distracting and disorienting than anything.
Cowboy Troy ushered in the couples’ solos next with his tune “I Play Chicken with the Train,” which happened to be the song that sealed a victory for season 14 winners Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd. Some of the couples—including Apolo Ohno and Karina Smirnoff, who performed an impressive lift—stepped up their games, while others—like Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy—tried to lasso entertainment value.
After the dizzying display came to a close, the judges had their say. Head honcho Len Goodman called the effort “fun, full of tricks and full of treats.” He was especially amused by Kirstie smacking Maks’ bottom during their solo. Bruno Tonioli thought it was a “fully loaded, fun-filled country extravaganza.” Carrie Ann Inaba enjoyed it, and was especially impressed with Kelly Monaco, Gilles Marini, and Sabrina Bryan. After a brief deliberation, the judges awarded two bonus points to “the one that was the most fun, the most entertaining”: Kirstie and Maks.
It was surprising to see Kirstie and Maks snag the extra points, given that the actress is by far the weakest link left on the show. It would’ve made more sense to give the points to a more talented pair, but the judges’ behavior is frequently hard to understand. Will those two little points wind up saving them from elimination?
