DWTS All Stars 2012 got a little crazier on October 15 as the nine remaining celebrity/professional pairs tackled their challenging Opponents’ Choice week routines. So how did Olympic champion Apolo Ohno and Karina Smirnoff cope with hip-hop?
Out of the gates, the talented–and perfectionistic–pro hoofer had plenty of trouble with the style, which was chosen by competitors Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani. Karina struggled mightily during rehearsals as she pointed out that “hip hop is definitely out of my element.” She cursed her way through their sessions, but Apolo had faith in her ability to get it done.
When the two hit the ballroom to deliver their “Poison” routine, Karina did indeed look a little uncomfortable, but Apolo rocked it out in black and gold. He seemed cool, confident and collected, and was so on top of his moves that not even an issue with his mic pack derailed him. It was puzzling when Karina ended the number in tears; she wasn’t perfect, but she also wasn’t bad.
The Dancing with the Stars judges were duly impressed with Apolo’s work. After dismissing Karina’s notion that she’d messed up the entire dance, Carrie Ann Inaba said she appreciated the “modern edge” of the choreography. Len Goodman said Apolo was “out there smokin'” and “fantastic.” Guest panelist Paula Abdul called him a hip-hop “natural” and admired his “swagger.” Finally, Bruno Tonioli marveled over Apolo’s ability to make even an awful move like “the Running Man look good.”
For their effort, Apolo and Karina earned 34.5 out of 40 possible points, which leaves them in seventh place entering the October 16 elimination show. Only Kirstie Alley and partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Bristol Palin and partner Mark Ballas scored lower marks.
With relatively poor scores, Apolo and Karina could be in danger on Tuesday night, but so could any of the couples. After all, the two lowest-scorers in recent weeks–Kirstie and Bristol–are still in the mix. Tune in to the DWTS All Stars 2012 week four results show on October 16 to find out which couple will say good-bye to their chance at Mirrorball glory.
