DWTS All Stars 2012 said farewell to another celebrity/professional couple at the close of the October 16 results show on ABC. So which hopefuls got the boot just a week shy of the sure-to-be-fun group freestyle round? Read on for a recap of the evening’s happenings.

Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough were first to be declared safe to perform again. They were followed by are-they-or-aren’t-they pair Kelly Monaco and Valentin Chmerkovskiy. But danger loomed for others, as Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas found themselves in jeopardy. Moments later, week three bottom two survivors Sabrina Bryan and Louis van Amstel earned a spot in week five.

Up next, funny guy and Dancing with the Stars alum Carson Kressley stepped into the spotlight the star of a fluff segment. The pre-taped package included a visit to the make-up trailer, where Carson helped Gilles Marini apply bronzer to his chest, as well as a peek at dress rehearsal. Shortly thereafter, show hosts Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke introduced the week’s Macy*s Stars of Dance, which featured Christopher Scott piece performed by the League of Extraordinary Dancers., Christina Grimmie sang “Titanium” in accompaniment.

Following the guest performance, three more couples lined up for their results. Stepping up were Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke, who vowed to dance to “Copa Cabana” during Guilty Pleasures week; Apolo Ohno and Karina Smirnoff, whose Hip-Hop number didn’t go over as well as they’d hoped; and Gilles and Peta Murgatroyd, who promised to perform a Rumba set to “I Will Always Love You” next week. Gilles and Peta and Emmitt and Cheryl were declared safe, while Apolo and Karina found themselves in danger.

The second guest performance of the evening featured Cheryl and longtime friends as they performed alongside percussionist Tito Puente, Jr.

Soon after, the next batch of couples stepped up to hear their fates. While Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani were proclaimed safe to dance again, Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy took a spot under the red lights of potential doom.

There was time for one more guest performance, so former Mirrorball winner Donny Osmond and UK sensation Susan Boyle teamed up to sing a duet next. Donny’s pro partner Kym Johnson joined forces with Tristan MacManus to accompany them on the ballroom floor.

With little time remaining in the hour, the hopefuls tackled the task of choosing their teams for next week’s group freestyle dance. As the two highest-scoring celebs thus far into the season, Gilles and Shawn were named team captains, and randomly chose their songs: “Gagnam Style” for Team Gilles, and “Call Me Maybe” for Team Shawn. Gilles won a coin toss, and selected the sexy Kelly and Val first, while Shawn opted to go with the energetic Sabrina and Louis. Gilles filled out his team with Kirstie and Maks and Emmitt and Cheryl, while Shawn chose Melissa and Tony and Apolo and Karina. That left Bristol and Mark as the last pair standing, and Tom said their status would depend on the outcome of the elimination.

After a break, Apolo and Karina were declared safe, leaving Kirstie and Maks and Bristol and Mark in the bottom two. After the usual dramatic pause, Bristol and Mark were booted from the competition. Bristol was gracious, and said she had “an awesome time and an awesome partner” and wished her co-stars “the best of luck.”

The DWTS All Stars 2012 season resumes October 22 at 8 PM with the first half of its next performance show.
