The DWTS All Stars 2012 season continued October 8 with Iconic Dances week. Although all of the couples performed admirably, TV personality Melissa Rycroft earned a share of the top spot on the week three leaderboard thanks to a daring Samba that left all three judges mightily impressed.
Following on the heels of an excellent week two Jive, Melissa admitted to pro partner Tony Dovolani that despite their success, she feared Tuesday’s double elimination. Her goal? To leave the audience speechless with their reinterpretation of Karina Smirnoff and J.R. Martinez’s season 13 Samba. Tony said he knew that Melissa would “embrace the role” as creative director, as required by Dancing with the Stars judges Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba, and Bruno Tonioli, but he was surprised by the scope of her dedication.
Melissa looked like the perfect Samba queen in hot pink and Tony shimmered in a cotton candy-colored shirt as the two hit the ballroom to present their “Conga” number. And impressive it was, featuring loads of intricate arm work, great hip action, and plenty of daring moves. When the number ended, Tony grinned like the Cheshire Cat before collapsing amid a cascade of confetti, and Melissa looked giddy.
Carrie Ann called it a “superstar Samba.” Len declared, “that’s what I’m talking about!” and likened the dance to a “can of soda” because it was “fizzy, refreshing and satisfying.” Bruno called her the “Samba sensation” and loved on the choreography.
For their effort, Melissa and Tony scored a trio of 9s, for a leaderboard-topping—and to date, season-high—mark of 27. They enter the October 9 elimination tied with Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovskiy.
Although it seems unlikely that the couples scoring the top marks of the week would be ousted, it’s hard to say how fans will vote. To see if Melissa and Tony make it through to week 4, watch the DWTS All Stars 2012 double elimination on October 9.
