DWTS All Stars 2012 continued October 8 on ABC with Iconic Dances week, which required the celebs –and not the pros– to take creative control as they reinvented iconic performances. One of the night’s classiest numbers sprang from the mind of Olympian Apolo Ohno, but his scores proved once again that the best routines often go unrewarded.
During rehearsals, pro Karina Smirnoff stressed the importance of creating a “memorable” routine. In response, Apolo opted to go with fellow All-Star Gilles Marini and then-partner Cheryl Burke’s “Fever” Foxtrot because it would allow him to show a different side of himself. He hoped to “emulate Gilles’ sexiness” and bring out his “inner sexy” without showing his “manboobs”. And Karina? She’d swirl the Dancing with the Stars ballroom as a statue come to life.
Apolo and Karina’s Foxtrot delivered all they hoped to accomplish and more. It had a classic understated sexiness and really showed off Apolo’s creative prowess. It was probably one of the best dances he’s done on either of his seasons on the show.
Head judge Len Goodman liked the “fluidity” and “musicality” but chided him for sometimes less-than-clean placement of feet and lack of time in hold. Bruno Tonioli called it “sensual”, “classy” and “classic” but told him to work on his arms. Carrie Ann Inaba called it a “memorable dance we’ll never forget”. She disagreed with Bruno’s comments on his arm extension, calling them beautiful.
Apolo and Karina scored a nine from Carrie Ann, an low-ball 8 from Len, and an 8.5 from Bruno, for a total of 25.5 on the night. The mark leaves them trailing co-leaders Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovskiy, and Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani by 1.5 points heading into tonight’s double elimination. It effectively places them in the middle of the pack, which is a disappointing place to be given the quality of their performance.
