An amazing electric blue surf has attracted many viewers in California. What caused the beautiful nighttime glow? During the day this tide is actually red, and quite unsightly, but once the sun sets, the bioluminescence is a shocking sight to behold.
The reason for the stunning electric blue surf is a plankton bloom. People have flocked to the beaches in San Diego to view this phenomenon over the past weeks. Thankfully for everybody else who can’t make it, they have taken plenty of video and pictures to share with the rest of the world.
Peter J. Franks said of the glowing waves, “When jostled, each organism will give off a flash of blue light created by a chemical reaction within the cell. When billions and billions of cells are jostled — say, by a breaking wave — you get a seriously spectacular flash of light.”
What a beautiful experience for nighttime beachgoers. Of course, daytime beachgoers have not loved this plankton bloom so much. The organisms have a smell, and it is not refreshing to swim in it. Because this bloom has lasted a month, it has been difficult for swimmers and surfers in San Diego.
