If you were one of the many whose jaws dropped when Esperanza Spalding’s name was called as the winner of the Grammy for Best New Artist, you’re not alone. In fact, if you were watching, you’d know that you’re in the same company as Justin Bieber, who lost the award to Spalding despite his phenomenal popularity and who looked more shocked than anyone when the screen panned out on the nominees.

Esperanza Spalding, who co-hosted the Grammys pre-telecast that aired on the Grammys site and YouTube before the show, looked stunning in a yellow gold evening gown, but the real beauty was in the grace with which she accepted the award.

Spalding, a rising jazz star, beat out not only fan favorite Justin Bieber for the award, but also Drake, Florence & the Machine, and Mumford & Sons, all of whom have had huge radio hits this year.

Were you surprised to hear Esperanza Spalding’s name called for Best New Artist? Do you think that Bieber or one of the other nominees will have a bit of backlash or that the Grammys will experience some backlash from their fans?
