‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Movie: Channing Tatum Drops Out of Casting Race

Although the Fifty Shades of Grey casting war continues, it will apparently have to do so without one of its most popular contenders. Channing Tatum has just announced he’s taking an “extended break” from acting to pursue directing, and he claims he already has several projects lined up. Tatum has often said that he would play the coveted role of Christian Grey in the movie version of E.L. James’ uber famous “mommie porn” novel only if his wife Jenna Dewan played Anastasia Steele. Could his sudden decision to remove himself form the contenders’ list mean that La Dewan has already been denied the part? Or worse that she’s reused to even consider playing submissive ninny–er–college grad Ana.

For whatever reasons, Channing Tatum has revealed he’ll take “an indefinite hiatus from acting, starting sometime in 2013.” Instead of performing in front of the camera, he’ll be hard at work behind it, directing movies with his producer partner, Reid Carolin.

“[Reid and I] have about three to four ideas that we love that are all in the hopper,” the Sexiest Man Alive explained. “By the end of next year, we’re going to shut things down and write the first thing that we’re going to direct. We’re going to be like, ‘All right, no more acting parts for a minute, let’s take a few and really get caring about that section of our career.’ I love the steps that I’ve taken acting-wise. That has been a wild sort of exploration. But I don’t want to just keep putting [directing] off for these fun and incredible opportunities.”

Tatum’s fans will no doubt weep and wail when they find there’s no chance their idol will star in what may well be the most eagerly awaited film of all time. However, they need not despair completely. They’ll be able to drool over–er–appreciate Tatum’s talents in a slew of other films that are already set for 2013 release, including White House Down and Side Effects, which was, like Magic Mike, directed by Steven Soderbergh. Furthermore, G.I. Joe 2 will finally be released.

So there you have it. Sometimes, a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do. Nevertheless, Tatum’s timing is suspect–er–interesting. Perhaps his decision to take a hiatus from performing has nothing to do with his wife winning the role of Ana. Perhaps, after being named the Sexiest man Alive and all, he’d rather bow out of the Fifty Shades of Grey movie casting competition gracefully than lose to one of the other contenders and lose face with his fans. It’s possible. Actors and egos, you know.

On the other hand, he might change his mind tomorrow.

Stay tuned.
