“Fish from Hell” have a bounty on their heads. Will this help eradicate them? The Maryland Department of Natural Resources Inland Fisheries will give people $200 gift cards to Bass Pro Shops for bringing in dead snakehead fish. There is a good reason too.

'Fish From Hell' Have Bounty on Their Heads in MarylandIt seems the “fish from Hell” can travel on land, and bite through a steel toed boot. Ouch! The species is from Africa, and it is upsetting the ecosystem in Maryland where it has thrived since 2002 in part because the fish has no natural predators in the region.

DNR Director Don Cosden said, “We do not want snakeheads in our waters. This initiative is a way to remind anglers that it is important to catch and remove this invasive species of fish.”

Officials do not believe they will be able to eradicate this hardy species of fish, but they do hope that the $200 gift card incentive will help control the snakehead fish population in Maryland.

Of course capturing and killing one of these “Fish from Hell” is no easy task. At least one person had to shoot them with a gun. Have you ever dealt with a snakehead fish? Would you try to kill one to get a $200 Bass Pro Shops gift card?

It is truly unfortunate that illegal sales of these fish in the U.S. have lead to such a flourishing population in a place where the fish are not naturally found. Hopefully, the species can be controlled so that it does not devastate other species in the region.
