Fossilized Pliosaur Called a ‘Crocodile on Steroids’ (Video)

UK scientists have unveiled a new fossilized sea monster, named the Pliosaur, which they say was the most dangerous predator that ever lived on Earth. Called a “crocodile on steroids,” the animal had an 8-foot head which contained a brain the size of a peanut. That means it took a bite first and never asked questions later.

The fossil is part of a new exhibit in Dorset, England, and was introduced by famed TV presenter Sir David Attenborough.

In his usually compelling style in the video below, Sir David paints a very vivid picture of what it must have been like to encounter the “most fearsome predator” ever to swim the oceans.

The head was reconstructed in what naturalists consider to be the most plausible representation of its real appearance, and the effect is chilling. Having an 8-foot head means the creature was probably 60 feet long. Plenty of belly room for gobbling up its prey, which it had to be larger than to overcome.

It’s amazing to think these creatures were swimming in the oceans millions of years ago. What possibly could have made them go extinct? Whatever the reason, the world is lucky that these monsters are only a dim memory and can never trouble swimmers again.

Except in dreams…
