French Open 2010 Results: Venus Williams (in racy outfit) advances to third round

Venus Williams advanced to the third round of the French Open May 26th, 2010. She beat Arantxa Parra Santonja 6-2, 6-4 to advance. She served at speeds up to 125 miles per hour and seemed to be in control the entire match. Venus, ranked second in the tournament, could meet sister Serena Williams in the finals. Serena is ranked third.

Venus again wore her attention-grabbing lacey corset dress. It has caused a lot of stir, and frankly, I think she looks ridiculous. There were several times when the dress came up and exposed her brown undergarments and it just wasn’t flattering.

“Lace has never been done before in tennis, and I’ve been wanting to do it for a long time,” she said. “The illusion of just having bare skin is definitely for me a lot more beautiful.”

Sorry Venus, I can think of a lot of adjectives to describe that dress, but ‘beautiful’ is not one of them.

But I guess she needs to figure out how to get attention somehow in this tournament. Her best performance here came in 2002 when she lost in the finals. Other than that, she has not gotten past the quarters (the last three years losing in the third round). And was it just me or did the stands seem vacant? She is the second seed and hardly anyone was there. It was only the second round but it’s a major grand slam tournament for crying out loud. I would kill for those seats!

Venus has said that she has 8 total outfits for this event. Let’s hope that this one gets retired soon!
