Gale Force New Year’s Day (photo essay)

Hubby and I do not usually get to spend time together on New Year’s Eve, so New Year’s Morning often becomes the time we hang out and celebrate. Though we are both musicians, he is the one usually playing somewhere on New Year’s Eve, and I get to either be a groupie, go to another party (if I’m invited), or stay home. This year I talked myself into staying home. I had a good fire going, a visit from B-Dawg and his girlfriend and puppy for a while, and I did not feel enthused about getting dressed up and going out BY MYSELF in the cold…to an event where not many would ask me to dance, and my husband would be preoccupied. In retrospect, I regret it! Some friends of ours went, and I could have hung out with them. C’est la vie…

New Year’s morning we woke to a gale-force howling off the Strait. We had breakfast and decided to head out for a drive, do a couple errands, and get coffee. My hubby was kind enough to stop a couple times so I could get out of the van and take some photos. Picture me (since I can’t take self-portraits yet) with the wind blowing my raincoat hood off and pulling my hair straight up into electrocution mode…

First stop, looking northwest at the corner of Fort Worden, Admiralty Inlet, and V Street. Overlooking the Marine Science Center and the Lighthouse at Fort Worden, Whidbey Island in the background…

In the other direction, a dead madrona and a fir frame the sun…

I get back into the van and we head downtown. It’s a bit daunting going down practically to sea level at high tide…

After getting thoroughly blasted by the wind, we head to Undertown, the site of the New Year’s gig, for coffee…I love the back alleys of Port Townsend.

More on Port Townsend sights, the back alleys, and Undertown another day.

Happy New Year to my Gather Friends!
