According to AceShowbiz.com, Clooney wasn’t so serious in his award reception speech, but rather added some touches of humor.  He noted “I have offered to go to south Sudan and have a wardrobe malfunction. But it was pointed out to me that I’m 49, and the consensus was that it would just be upsetting. And kind of sad.” He continued, turning his speech to more important issues including recent national disasters.  He said that he hopes someone watching the Emmys would find a way to “keep the spotlight burning on these heartbreaking situations that continue to be heartbreaking long after the cameras go away.”  A noble and encouraging statement from one of Hollywood’s brightest.

Other celebrities who have won this special award including talk show host Oprah Winfrey and comedian Bill Cosby.  Clooney is just the fourth to win the award named after comedian Bob Hope.  Among his efforts are a Haiti earthquake support telethon and helping to found a charity for Darfur genocide.

As a celebrity, Clooney is a lot like one of his A-list colleagues, Sandra Bullock.  Bullock was recently at a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open a free clinic in New Orleans, Louisiana.  Clooeny has shown he has a very generous and charitable side, as has Bullock and many other celebs despite the negative press always seeming to dominate celeb headlines.  This award had nothing to do with his acting, as he’s already received accolades for that.  It’s likely that Clooney would put this trophy above all of the others, as it shows his truly lasting contributions to the world.
