The shocking story of a youth whose life was abruptly cut short. It’s been a whirlwind of a story that has gripped the nation, and now has another chapter in the grueling real-life drama.

TMZ reports that Florida special prosecutor Angela Corey just announced earlier this afternoon that Georgia Zimmerman, the neighbourhood watch volunteer accused of murdering 17 year-old Trayvon Martin, is officially facing a second-degree murder charge.

“I can tell you we did not come to this decision lightly,” Corey said earlier today to reporters. “We do not prosecute by public pressure.”

The case has had a frenzy of media attention, with the accused, George Zimmerman, claiming that he shot Martin in self-defence. The story has received a slew of celebrity support, with some saying the media coverage of the murder has been completely sensationalized.

Martin was on his way home from a convenience store, where he bought some Skittles and iced tea, when the 28 year-old accused called in the Sanford Police Department to “report a young black male acting suspiciously, possibly on drugs.”

The phone attendant informed Zimmerman he didn’t need to follow the youth — which he didn’t obey. Moments later, Zimmerman reportedly exited his vehicle, and approached the unarmed Martin with a 9-millimeter weapon.

George Zimmerman is currently in police custody, and if found guilty, could face up to life behind bars.

What do you think? Did the media go overboard on the coverage of the case, or is this simply the unfortunate reality of our society today?
