Giffords Faces Jared Lee Loughner

Jared Lee Loughner was handed a life sentence today for last year’s shooting that wounded former congresswoman Gabby Giffords and killed a handful of people. It was already known that Loughner was going to get the life sentence, due to the plea deal he had taken a few months ago — not that he deserved one in the first place. Was justice served yesterday? Or did this guy deserve the death penalty?

Gabby Giffords showed up at his sentencing on Thursday to stand face to face with her attempted killer. Giffords was shot in the head by the psychopath, permanently damaging her brain. Even though she has made tremendous progress in recovering from the trauma, Giffords now suffers from an inability to speak properly and has problems remembering words, among other things. But she knows what happened to her, and she was able to look Jared Lee Loughner in the eye yesterday.

This closes the book on the case of Loughner’s assassination attempt of Giffords, and successful murders of a judge, a child, and other victims from the “congress on your corner” event in Arizona. It’s been long argued about what could have caused him from doing this, and it’s pretty clear that his crimes were politically motivated. Loughner was obsessed with the gold standard and had a seething hatred for congresswoman Giffords — who is a blue dog Democrat. Not long before his assassination attempt of the congresswoman, Sarah Palin had depicted gun cross hairs over her district on a map. Could this have caused it? It’s believed by many that it was in fact responsible — and it probably was.
