Glee‘s upcoming fourth season is going to see the New Directions with a new look. While not everyone graduated at the end of season 3, the two leads—Rachel and Finn—did, meaning they need people to step up into the spotlight. Will Sam be the guy who does just that?

Season 4 Spoilers

"Britney 2.0" Photo Credit: Adam Rose/FOXAccording to TVLine, executive producer Brad Falchuk has revealed, “Toward the end of last season we got how to write for [Chord] and [who] the Sam character was. And he really stepped up. It’s nice having him be, in terms of the guys there in the choir room, the male lead right now. He’s definitely carrying the weight that he needs to carry there, in a way that was very different than Cory [Monteith] or Mark [Salling]. He has a very specific innocence to him.” Sam can certainly handle being male lead of the club, but with Falchuk calling him that “right now,” could it change over the course of the school year? Could someone else end up stepping up and taking the spotlight away from Sam? It is going to be Sam’s senior year, so could he end up trying his hand at another extracurricular activity and letting his responsibilities with New Directions slip a bit, or will he remain steady all season and be the next Finn for them? Will he lead New Directions to another Nationals win?

Also, as previously teased, Sam will have “a mysterious new love interest” in Glee season 4. Will it be a returning character from season 3, or could one of the new characters being introduced catch his eye this fall? Last season saw him fighting for Mercedes, but that’s going to be over (at least for now—anything could happen on this show). Will this new love interest end up being a relationship that lasts?
