Glee‘s upcoming fourth season is going to see the relationships on the show tested. With everyone heading on different paths, especially for those who graduated, it’s not much of a surprise. So what does “The Break-Up” have in store in the fall?
Season 4 Episode 4 “The Break-Up” Spoilers
TVLine talked to executive producer Brad Falchuk about this episode, and he teased, “All of the core relationships are tested. I’m not going to say who breaks up and who doesn’t, but they all — Santana/Brittany, Kurt/Blaine, Will/Emma, Rachel/Finn — get kicked in the nuts. And it’s all about how do they recover — and can they recover? And some don’t. Absolutely some don’t. Of those couples, not all of them are going to make it. It’s like Titanic.” Uh-oh.
Will and Emma seem to be the most likely to stay together; they are both still at McKinley, though it wouldn’t be surprising if they get into some arguments over wedding plans. The other three couples mentioned are all going to be facing long-distance relationships, and Rachel and Finn did seem to have basically broken up in the season 3 finale, when he sent her to New York and revealed he was joining the Army. However, it still has yet to be revealed what’s going to happen there. What will happen to Finn? There’s going to be a new guy in Rachel’s life who’s interested, but could Finn return and decide to stay in New York with Rachel? Will that be decided in this episode? One of the couples facing a long-distance relationship is Brittany and Santana. Brittany had to repeat her senior year, but after everything it took for them to get where they were at the end of season 3, could they really end things?
There have been rumors that Kurt and Blaine will be breaking up, and Falchuk did point to “Kurt’s decision to follow Rachel to New York” as something that “will test their romance like never before.” Blaine is going to be a senior this year, and while the Glee season 4 promo that has been released (below) shows Kurt at McKinley, that’s not going to last. They had discussed doing the long-distance thing when Kurt had thought he’d get into NYADA, but will they realize that’s not realistic once it actually comes down to it? Falchuk explained, “with all the couples we’re really trying to look at what it takes to have a relationship when one person leaves.”
Season 4 is going to be also “focused on giving [the characters] more individual stories.” They’re not just part of a relationship, these are also individuals, and like last year, there will be seniors figuring out what’s next after high school while also figuring out what they want to do in their senior year—whether that’s leading New Directions now that Rachel and Finn are gone or perhaps another extracurricular activity as well, like the musical last year.
