GOP Senator Jim Bunning Blocks Unemployment Extension

On Thursday night, at the 11th hour before the last unemployment extension was set to expire, Senator Jim Bunning (R-KY) refused to go along with unanimous consent to bring to a vote a 30-day extension for unemployment benefits.

Bunning claims that he doesn’t oppose extending benefits, but rather he opposes the method proposed to pay for it, which would add to the deficit. Bunning wants to pay for the extension using stimulus funds.

The Senate’s GOP leadership did not support Bunning’s objections.

An irresponsible objection to make at a time when millions of unemployed Americans desperately need this extension.

The unemployment rate in Bunning’s state of Kentucky is 10.7%.
