Many of the Grammy Awards 2013 winners have been revealed ahead of the televised ceremony. In fact, 70 out of 81 winners have been announced including Rihanna, Drake, Jay-Z and Kanye West. Many believe another hip-hop star, Frank Ocean, may join them with big awards later on.
According to the LA Times live blog for the pre-telecast, Drake won the Best Rap Album award for his album “Take Care,” even though he wasn’t among nominees for the Album of the Year. Some felt Drake might edge his way into that category, but he did not. His fellow rap stars, Jay-Z and Kanye West picked up several awards for their song “N…in Paris” including Best Rap Performance. The song also gave producer Hit Boy a Grammy, and he tweeted in excitement about the win:
“I definitely just won a Grammy for a song I produced for Jay-Z & Kanye west called “N—-s in Paris”. God is real.”
Singer Rihanna is planning to attend tonight’s ceremony with Chris Brown, and has already won an award. She picked up Best Short-Form Music Video for “We Found Love” featuring Calvin Harris. LA Times said of her win:
“She was not at the pre-show to accept the trophy, nor was the video’s director, Juliette Larthe. So there is no gossip to report. Let us take a moment to realize how rare what just happened is. Rihanna’s name was mentioned, and there was no gossip involved.”
Other early award winners announced included Taylor Swift, Jimmy Fallon, Lecrae, DJ Skrillex, and Esperanza Spalding. The good news for those planning to watch the televised 2013 Grammy Awards on CBS is that there are 11 big prizes still to be handed out on the air, and plenty of star-studded performances. Nonetheless, some music fans may enjoy seeing their favorite artists accept awards and make speeches on TV, rather than having to watch it online.
Do you think there should be more awards handed out on the televised Grammy Awards, or is it already a good balance of performances and award presentations?
