Grey’s Anatomy season 8 ended with at least one doctor dead after the plane crash: Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh). While Mark got a chance to say goodbye to her (and talk about what they could’ve had in quite the emotional scene), another man in her life didn’t—and doesn’t even know that she died. What could be coming up for Jackson?
Grey’s Season 9 Spoilers
Glamour talked to Jesse Williams about the big season 8 finale, “Flight,” (which he has yet to see) and what he sees coming up for his character. The end of season 8 saw Jackson and April sleeping together before the boards (and during a break), and there is a question of what Lexie’s death could mean for the relationships back at Seattle Grace, such as Jackson and April’s. According to Williams, “I view it as a big adventure—it can go a lot of different ways, and now you have a whole new element thrown in there, which is Lexie. And Mark, my co-worker and kind of my guy, because obviously he’s traumatized, and I’m going to be traumatized to a degree. My friend/girlfriend is obviously going to have to deal with me losing someone that I was intimate with, and me and her, we haven’t really figured out what we’re going to do yet.”
Everyone’s going to have to deal with losing Lexie, and Jackson could end up having to be there for Mark to help him through it while perhaps leaning back on April himself (assuming that everyone stays at Seattle Grace in the aftermath of the crash). Right now this is assuming that Mark survives the crash. He and Arizona were the ones more severely injured out of the doctors still alive, but it doesn’t look like anyone’s planning to have Mark die out there as well, with Williams talking about how Mark will react. That could always change, but it does seem like they would have a storyline they could use with Mark living and figuring out how to deal with Lexie’s death and it falling on Jackson to help him out.
Williams was also asked about what could happen between his character and Sarah Drew’s: “What’s most important is that we trust each other, which is why, Jackson I think, trusted her and went with her when she pushed herself on to him. He got burned with Lexie. He should have known better. He probably did know better, but at least with April, he knows he can trust her, and she’s going to look out for him. As crazy as she behaves sometimes, she’s always there for him.” At the end of the season, Jackson was prepared to leave Seattle behind, while April had no idea what she was going to do next. Will that change with the beginning of Grey’s Anatomy season 9 now that they’ve lost Lexie (and possibly someone else as well)? However, even if they do both end up staying at Seattle Grace, it doesn’t mean that anything else will necessarily happen between them. Perhaps in their grief, they could fall into bed together again, but it may be best if they don’t make any decisions like that quite so soon after finding out a friend has died.
