‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 9 Spoilers: Will Somebody Else Die?

Grey’s Anatomy season 8 ended with Lexie dead and Teddy fired and leaving Seattle Grace behind. “Flight” was an intense finale, but the heartbreak may not be over yet.

Grey’s Season 9 Teasers

Shonda Rhimes talked to E! Online about the finale and pointed out that “they are still out there.” Yes, Lexie died, and yes, Teddy left, but the episode did end with the rest of the doctors who were on the plane “still out there in the forest.” In fact, Rhimes went on to say, “we don’t know if they are going to be OK. We left it open for a reason because…I hate to say this, but just because you saw people alive at the end of the finale doesn’t mean they’re going to be alive when the season starts up. We are completely jumping off into the unknown next season.” That’s not too surprising because the Grey’s Anatomy season 8 finale did see those other doctors all injured and hungry. They ran out of matches, they don’t have any food, and they have injuries that really need to be treated in a hospital.

So it’s possible that season 9 could begin with another death. Rhimes did say, “we still don’t totally know who’s OK,” and “I do know where we are going to pick up next season.” She was definitely right to issue that warning on Twitter before the finale that it had a “very unsettling” ending. It seems likely that the episode could pick up from right where it left off or the next day and perhaps one or more of the doctors unconscious in the woods. Owen was finally checking his messages and learning that they never showed up at the hospital, so it could pick up with the doctors back in Seattle finding out what happened and them trying to find them, leaving viewers wondering what happened to the survivors until they do find them. Whatever does happen, this finale is going to greatly impact what happens when the premiere begins—and likely well into the ninth season.

While the others’ fates are still uncertain, it is certain that Chyler Leigh and Kim Raver will not be on the show for season 9. At least with Teddy, they could return to the character and bring her back if it works out. In fact, Rhimes even brought up “a Med Com series” and said “I think maybe it’d be cool one day if she could come back.” Depending on how long Grey’s ends up going, it would be nice to just revisit the character at some point to see where she is. There will probably at least be a mention of what she’s up to at some point, but that’s still not the same.

However, that was it for Lexie. Rhimes did bring up, “We saw Denny as a ghost, and people didn’t really like that, did they?” While it’s hard to complain about seeing Jeffrey Dean Morgan on the television screen again, that was a poor choice and the last thing they’d want to do is repeat that with Lexie. That’s why it’s not too surprising that Shonda Rhimes said, “I don’t think we’re going to see Lexie Grey ever again.” Instead, this does open the show up for the aftermath of her death, as it affects a number of people. The finale did offer a tease of “what was supposed to happen,” according to Rhimes, if she hadn’t died. That was what those final words about a family for Mark and Lexie were about. Many fans wish that could be what they were looking forward to seeing in season 9, not possibly more deaths and Mark without Lexie after they both said they were “meant to be.”
