Chances are, if you are over the age of 20, you will remember Gumby—whether it is watching the original show on an old television set or watching re-runs on your flat screen, it was a part of most people’s childhoods. And even if you haven’t seen the show, you still probably know all about the green clay character and his sidekick, Pokey the ever-loyal pony.

What a lot of people don’t know about the child-like character, is that his voice came from a man—not a child. Dick Beals is one of the popular voice-over actors because of his signature high pitched voice—which was his natural voice. Beals suffered from a glandular condition that resulted in his voice never getting any deeper after childhood, so he turned that into a lucrative career. While Gumby was his most notable work, his voice was used in over 3,000 commercials during his lifetime.

Unfortunately, the world of television lost a great talent on Tuesday, when Dick Beals died at the age of 85. While it is unknown what caused his death, reports do say that he passed away at Vista Gardens Memory Care in Southern California.

Though Dick is no longer here, he has left the legacy of Gumby to add a little more character and fun into the childhoods of generations to come. May his memory bring back the best memories of your youth.
