Happy Cinco de Mayo – Cinco de Mayo history and celebrations

Americans are the reason that Cinco De Mayo has turned into a larger celebration. In Mexico, this holiday is actually minor. It has gained popularity in America though in recent years making it a great reason to celebrate on the fifth of May every year.

What could be better than great Mexican food and a margarita today? Really nothing. Of course, Cinco De Mayo is about more than good food and good drinks. It is about the Mexicans defeating the French army at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

Even Barack Obama is getting in on the excitement of this festive holiday. Tonight he will host the traditional Cinco De Mayo reception in the White House Rose Garden. As we learned yesterday during Laura Bush’s interview on Oprah, the Obamas will actually have to pay for their food. At least that’s what I think. I wasn’t totally clear on if it was for official events too or just in the private quarters.

By the way, Laura Bush had a new book come out yesterday called ‘Spoken from the Heart.’

Anyway, happy Cinco De Mayo. If you enjoy a margarita, make sure that you have someone to drive you.
