Happy Endings is an incredibly light comedy despite the way the show began—Alex (Elisha Cuthbert) left Dave (Zachary Knighton) at the altar. In this week’s episode, “You’ve Got Male,” the ABC comedy will touch on a bit of a controversial topic—two men kissing on TV—but it’s sure to keep the situation light.
After all, every week, Happy Endings has been packed with jokes, including ones about Max (Adam Pally) being gay. In fact, just last week in “Of Mice and Jazz Kwon-Do,” Max called his friend Brad (Damon Wayans Jr.) a gaycist for assuming that all gays are the same, and as such, that they’re all compatible. Rather than making gaycist a discriminatory word, Max seemed to enjoy it, making the word his own. The episode was, more than anything, playful.
Chances are Happy Endings “You’ve Got Male” will be playful, too. In the episode, which airs on May 11, 2011, Alex’s store has a new next-door neighbor, a coffee chain. Max organizes a protest and then realizes the owner is none other than his new boyfriend Ian (Max Greenfield). It will be Max and Ian who will be sharing a kiss out on the sidewalk, and the question is: will the show be accused of pushing a gay agenda, like Glenn Beck once accused Glee of after Blaine and Kurt shared a kiss?
That seems unlikely. More and more shows, particularly on ABC backed shows—from Emily’s (Shay Mitchell) relationships Pretty Little Liars to Callie and Arizona on Grey’s Anatomy—have featured and even celebrated gay relationships. Yet, that doesn’t mean it’s pushing a gay agenda. It’s just a part of the story the TV characters share.
And knowing Max on Happy Endings? It won’t be a serious moment at all.
Two new back-to-back episodes of the ABC comedy air this Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 10PM Eastern.
