Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Liam Payne make up the biggest boy band in the world right now, but it should be obvious that they don’t feel secure with their spot on top—some of the guys have been feuding with members of fellow British boy band The Wanted on Twitter. However, perhaps they should really be worried about Union J.
The boy band composed of George Shelley, Jaymi Hensley, Josh Cuthbert, and JJ Hamblett was recently eliminated from The X Factor, so their story is already similar to that of One Direction—the guys of 1D also didn’t win their season of the show.
The members of Union J are already striving to become just as successful as 1D, but they want to make sure that everyone knows that they won’t be copying One Direction’s sound. According to Entertainmentwise, here’s what Jaymi Hensley said about UJ’s music:
“I think we’ve got a different sound already. Vocally I think we’re different as there’s different styles of singing in our band then there is in theirs. So we’re going to go out and find out what suits us best. They’ve (One Direction) nailed it on the head. They’ve got everything right.”
Unfortunately the boy band can’t completely avoid comparisons to 1D—fans have already noticed that George Shelley has the same mop top as Harry, and he also seems to be just as big of a chick magnet. However, UJ has one thing that 1D doesn’t—an openly gay member.
There is a group of Directioners who are obsessed with the idea of Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles being secretly gay even though Louis has lashed out at these fans over and over again. For some reason girls seem to want a boy band with a gay member, and now they’ve got one to support.
Jaymi recently talked to The Sun about his decision to come out, and here’s what he said about a conversation he had with Louis Walsh:
“I spoke to Louis about this and he said, ‘put it this way, both of my big boy bands had a gay member in them.’ So he said it fits the formula quite well. Every boy band has got to have a gay one! And Louis just said ‘do it’.”
Louis Walsh was wrong since 1D doesn’t have a gay member, but who knows? Maybe Jaymi being out and proud will make UJ an even bigger success. The fight for gay rights is a really big deal right now, so teen girls might see supporting a band with a gay member as their way of supporting the cause.
So what do you think—will having a gay member help UJ?
