Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan Accused of Copying Another Band

Harry Styles has been accused of copying another musician, but no one is calling the singer out for stealing Susan Boyle’s hairstyle – instead some fans of The Clash have pointed out that the beginning of One Direction’s new song “Live While We’re Young” sounds strikingly similar to the beginning of The Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go.”

The two riffs do sound rather similar, but 1D’s opening isn’t quite as strong as the beginning of The Clash’s classic tune. 1D’s opening sounds watered-down and artificial, not raw and powerful like the punk rock band’s riff. And surprisingly “Should I Stay or Should I Go” is a catchier tune than “Live While We’re Young” – One Direction’s latest song isn’t quite the earworm that “What Makes You Beautiful” was.

Fans probably shouldn’t blame Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Liam Payne for the slight similarity between the two songs since it’s highly unlikely that they arranged the music for the tune, and perhaps those accusing 1D of stealing shouldn’t be so hard on the boy band – it’s not like they took a page from Vanilla Ice by making their entire song one big riff rip-off (“Ice, Ice Baby” “borrows” the riff from the Queen/David Bowie tune “Under Pressure”). Even the Beatles have been accused of copying other artists – it’s more common in the music industry than a lot of people realize.

If 1D does want to pay homage to great British bands of the past, perhaps they should get permission to do covers of some of their best songs — just imagine the guys rocking out to the Sex Pistols’ “Anarchy in the U.K.” Zayn Malik would look pretty punk with all of his tattoos and Sid Vicious’s signature spiky hair, and Niall Horan would obviously be Johnny Rotten with his lighter-colored locks.

Or perhaps the guys could cover The Kinks’ beloved song “Lola” – who doesn’t want to hear Louis Tomlinson sing about falling in love with a transvestite? And just imagine how Directioners would react if Harry hit the stage dressed in drag (someone would have to play lovely Lola).

So what do you think – should 1D “borrow” from the best British rock bands a little more often?
