‘Hawaii Five-O’ Stars Scott Caan and Alex O’Loughlin Have Different Takes on Staying Busy

Fervent fans of Hawaii Five-O feed on the chemistry and kismet banter between Scott Caan as Danny “Danno” Williams and Alex O’Loughlin as Steve McGarrett. Both characters have their own baggage, and butt heads over the small stuff in nearly every episode, but when it comes to the big picture of putting the bad guys behind bars, they are one solid front. Viewers can rest easy now, knowing that the drama’s third season is a go, and both actors are back to join costars Grace Park, Daniel Dae Kim, and Masi Oka in keeping the island safe, and showing off its lush scenery along with a few of those shirtless scenes.

Scott Caan came on Jimmy Kimmel this week in full beard, quite the departure from his sun-kissed look on his series. He’s been starring in his own play, No Way Around But Through, with Melanie Griffith at the Falcon Theatre in Burbank. The multitalented actor also has a new book of photography to discuss, which Kimmel mercilessly teased as too hot for censors to see, despite Caan’s reputation as a photographer who’s “never gonna be an animal,” and thus, gets a lot of great shots of the famous and not so famous. Scott Caan probably finds those takes roughing up the perpetrators and cuffing them against the car as something natural, because he shared that he and his famous pop, James Caan, frequently used to “punch face” and wrestle rough throughout his growing years, even to the horror of a genteel date who would become a future wife of Caan senior. Caan relates he is “grateful” for the job of Hawaii Five-O, but finds it hard being away from the mainland, and loves staying busy with projects of all sorts at once. His on-screen partner has a different attitude.

Alex O’Loughlin is back and better than ever following his time off for “supervised treatment for prescription pain medication,” which meant that he missed the big team up episode with NCIS: Los Angeles, but did appear in a thought-provoking episode of mystery for his drama’s season finale. The Australian-born actor recently gushed he was “doing great” following his brief rehab stint. Differing from his costar Caan, O’Loughlin thrives on the 14-hour work schedule of the drama, and says “when something is so enormous in your life” and then “all of a sudden, you’re not at work” was a situation that was difficult for him to handle. O’Loughlin’s co-stars had difficulty with the shift of life on-set without him, too, but now it seems Steve and Danno will be back full strength, swimming the surf and shooting on target once more.
