Hope Solo: “‘Dancing with the Stars’ is Rigged!”

Hope Solo apparently didn’t enjoy her time on Dancing with the Stars very much. She has claimed that her partner, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, once hit her during a practice session. And now she’s also claiming that the show is fixed!

In her book Solo: A Memoir of Hope, the soccer goalie writes that “occurrences during her stint on the show’s [13th] season revealed the show’s producers — and not the audience of voters — were actually calling the shots as to who would be eliminated in a given week,” according to RadarOnline.com. She writes about one specific incident in which Maks “stirred up trouble with the judges to milk the ensuing controversy for a few more weeks of airtime” after learning before the show that he and Hope were scheduled to be eliminated.

“Maks later told me that he had argued with the judges because he had been told we were going to be eliminated, that there was some secret memo going around that said who would be ousted each week,” Hope writes in her book. “He explained that he wanted to cause some drama on the live portion of the show so that they wouldn’t be able to resist keeping us around, hoping for more fireworks. It seems to have worked — we weren’t eliminated that week.”

Based strictly on talent, Hope should have finished maybe sixth or seventh that season, because she wasn’t that great (and she even said she didn’t want to be there), but she ended up finishing fourth. Maybe she has a really large fanbase that kept voting for her each week. Or maybe there’s something to her claims, since Dancing with the Stars doesn’t reveal the vote totals individual contestants get, and Maks did throw his tantrum right after what the judges called their “worst dance of the whole season,” which would have given the show justification to kick them off. According to Radar, “insiders say the show’s producers are livid with Hope, believing ‘she made up the allegations merely to sell books,’ and that ABC is exploring legal options against the Olympian for her writings.” But if Hope put those allegations in print, wouldn’t the publishing company have had its attorney(s) thoroughly evaluate her manuscript to make sure they couldn’t get sued? And wouldn’t ABC, if it filed a lawsuit, have to turn over its vote totals from Hope’s season to prove that the public did actually determine who went home each week? ABC obviously wouldn’t want to do that if the show’s producers were deciding eliminations. So Hope’s claims will end up being more believable if ABC doesn’t sue. But anyone who watches the show should know by now that it’s fixed anyway, so Hope’s claims are hardly shocking.

What do you think? Is Dancing with the Stars fixed? Is Hope Solo just making stuff up to sell books? Sound off in the comments!
