heat snuggles tight

stifling like a quilt

on hot summer night


in shade seeking sheltering


in sweat-sodden clothes

perspiration beads

seeds for gleaming streams  of sweat

that slip and drip

from chin and nose tip

a trail of drops seen

tells where I’ve been

blinding shimmering

heat waves simmering

false hope glimmering

in distant looming

gray thunder-booming

respite assuming

- but -

promise reneging

to hot bodies begging

short shower

cool and cruel glower

refreshing, raindrops seem

yet, subliming to steam

sadly, not -

rather, making this day

hotter than
