UTEP lost today to Houston during the C-USA Tournament Championship, with a final of 81-73. Demolishing their 16 game winning streak, the #1 seeded UTEP Miners let it all go, losing to the only team that beat them in conference during the regular season. Congrats to the Cougars, who grabbed an automatic nod to the NCAA Tournament 2010, their first conference return trip since 1992! Houston coach Tom Penders was ecstatic, ““We’re dancing! I may be dancing a little slower than the last time I was, but I’m dancing.”
Houston’s Kevin Lewis certainly showed up to win, and shot over a third of the game’s points with 28. UTEP’s Randy Culpepper racked up 20 points, starting off the game strong, but ended a tad dismal in the last half of the game. Though Houston clenching the championship is an upset, UTEP is expected to be selected Sunday as one of the NCAA Tournament 2010 teams. We will find out the complete NCAA Tournament Bracket 2010 on Sunday, once all the other conference championships are finalized.
