How to Make a Horse Cake

I wish I could take all the credit for this but I got this idea from Family Fun and did the decorations a bit differently they did. You can see their Horse Cake here:

My Mom’s birthday was on May 19th and she is one horse crazy woman. I mean so horse crazy that she collects just about anything horses. Last year I drew a horse onto her cake but this year I wanted to take it a step further. I didn’t have time to think of something on my own this year so I went online and found this very quick and easy horse cake from Family Fun.

You will need:

a cake mix

brown frosting

and other misc candy/frosting for your horse

After you bake your cake in a 13×9 pan, freeze it until it’s firm. I recommend doing this with ANY cake that you want to decorate. It makes it a lot easier then a soft one. Cakes thaw out pretty quickly and taste the same so you don’t have to worry about any problems if you freeze it.

Frozen Cake. Now take your cake out of the pan and put it on a foil lined tray (or whatever you want to serve it on)

After it’s frozen, cut it into the shape of a horse head.

Trim the sides so they’re curved or rounded. Cut a small ear piece off at the bottom of the cake as shown above.

Frost it

Use a piece of candy for the eye OR use icing or gel in a tube. I used white and then black.

You can use frosting for the mane but I wanted something a little different. I used sugar crystals that were mixed in pink and white (I really liked the end result). Then I used black icing in a tube to circle the eye to make it stand out more. I also used the black icing to draw the nose and for the horse’s bridle (or as Family Fun recommends, you can use black licorice but most people I know don’t like the taste of it). The two dots on the bridle are gummy treats (Family Fun recommends lifesavers but you can do any circle candy you want.

And the finished result (ignore the red lid, I forgot to move it for the picture)

This cake as a hit at the birthday party.
