Acclaimed actor Jeffrey Wright has been cast as Beetee in the Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire, Lionsgate announced Friday. His is one of the last major roles to be filled as the studio wraps up casting, and the choice couldn’t have come much later—the movie is set to begin shooting this month.
Wright may be new to the Hunger Games family, but he’s an old hand when it comes to movies, big and small. Along with the likes of Donald Sutherland, Woody Harrelson, and Philip Seymour Hoffman, he brings some serious acting cred to Catching Fire. Known for his award-winning performances in both the stage and television versions of the play Angels in America, Wright first made a name for himself in movies with the title role in 1996′s Basquiat.
Still, despite also co-starring in big films like The Manchurian Candidate with Denzel Washington, Syriana with George Clooney, and the last two James Bond flicks, Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, this highly talented actor has mostly flown under the radar in terms of Hollywood stardom. So it’s good to hear that he’ll be getting some more exposure as part of the Hunger Games phenomenon. Hopefully his performance will make movie lovers want to check out his excellent work in some of his other films.
Be sure to watch Jeffrey Wright compete as Beetee with Katniss and the rest of the tributes in the Quarter Quell when Catching Fire comes out next November!
