Netherlands will play Spain for the prestigious World Cup title this Sunday, July 11 and expect “Hup Holland Hup” to crank up on trending topics on Twitter in the coming days, it can be translated to something like “Go Holland Go”. When I first saw this phrase I didn’t know it is a song. Until I mingle one of the link that led me to this Youtube video below!

It might be usually shouted enthusiastically by excited soccer supporters but in reality it can be used by anyone to encourage somebody to “hurry up a bit.” Just switch Holland to someone’s name or even your own name. It’s a kicker and good motivation!

“Hup Holland Hup” is the first line of the chorus of a popular song that has been sung since 1974: Archaic? And Orange by the way is national historic color of Netherlands.

Check the original Dutch lyrics

Hup Holland hup
Laat de leeuw niet in z’n hempie staan
Hup Holland hup
Trek het beestje geen pantoffels aan
Hup Holland hup
Laat je uit ‘t veld niet slaan
Want de leeuw op voetbalschoenen
Durft de hele wereld aan
Want de leeuw op voetbalschoenen
Durft de hele wereld aan

In English

Go Holland go

Don’t make the lion look foolish.

Go Holland go

Release the animal

Go Holland go

Don’t let them take you aback

Because the lion wearing football shoes

Can take on the whole world
