Ian’s Pizza is connecting union protesters in Wisconsin with supporters from all over the world, including Egypt. Supporters from as far away as Australia, Canada, Denmark, England, Finland, Germany, Korea, Switzerland, and Turkey have called the downtown Madison pizza joint to donate pizzas to public employees demonstrating against Governor Scott Walker’s plan to eliminate collective bargaining rights.
Ian’s Pizza staff has been tracking the donations on a chalkboard and posting regular updates on its Facebook page. Donations have also rolled in from just about every state in the nation and Washington, D.C. As a result, Ian’s has delivered of around 500 pizzas to hungry union workers, many of whom have have been camped out at the State Capitol for days now. Assistant manager Jack Thurnblad told The Daily Cardinal another 575 pizzas still needed to be delivered.
There has been so much demand that Ian’s Pizza has shifted away from its usual business model to focus exclusively on providing donated pizzas to protesters bunkered down in Wisconsin’s capital. Meanwhile, Governor Scott Walker has been receiving verbal support from high profile Republican celebrities Sarah Palin and Tim Pawlenty, both former public employees who are eager to receive the special benefits that come along with a certain top job at the White House.
